Remote Island, grass huts
These grass huts sit on Havelock Island, one of the smaller islands of the Andaman group. We took a three-hour ferry ride to it and stayed for a couple of days. It’s bucolic, without any settlement larger than a one-street village. People live mostly in grass huts, and the few tourists stay in some small hotels strung along a beach, as we did. We have photos of idyllic beaches with white sand and palm trees. What travel posters with these pictures don’t convey is the fact that the air is hot and sticky, which adds a realistic, and less enjoyable touch, to what looks like paradise. We enjoyed our stay at Havelock, but realized that a couple of days of tropical paradise was sufficient, and the busier outside world was a better place to spend our life.
